For several years, FUNZEL members, specialists in birds (ornithologists), have studied the populations of the Pacific Parakeet (Psittacara strenuus) in the surroundings of Antiguo Cuscatlán. Based on their findings, FUNZEL lobbied with the Municipal Authorities who declared the municipality of Antiguo Cuscatlán a Pacific Parakeet sanctuary. Currently with financial support from Banco Agrícola and in collaboration with the José Simeón Cañas Central American University (UCA), FUNZEL studies the size and behavior of the green pericón populations in Antiguo cuscatlán that are concentrated within the UCA campus, under the leadership of an ornithologist Ricardo Ibarra, member and associate investigator of FUNZEL. This species, which is poached for the illegal pet trade, is THREATENED according to the MARN ́s List of Endangered and Endangered Species.
In addition, in partnership with the Paso Pacifico organization, FUNZEL is working on the recovery of the yellow-naped parrot (Amazona auropalliata) in the vicinity of Trifinio and the Montecristo National Park in Metapán.
